Trump’s Acquitted, Now What?

Earlier this Wednesday, the Senate acquitted Trump on two articles of impeachment. After what felt like years of constant press, stress, and investigation, the House presented the two articles: 1) abuse of power and 2) obstruction of Congress.

The first article failed, 48-52, with 67 votes needed to impeach. And in a historical move, Sen. Mitt Romney was the single Republican to vote in favor of the abuse of power charge. The second article then failed, 47-53. Only all of the Democrats voted to convict Trump on both counts.

This tale of impeachment seemingly ends with President Trump tweeting a parody video suggesting a lifetime of Trump presidency.

I remember watching this video circulate last fall, I remember feeling chills run up my arms and down my back. I remember feeling hopeless, my eyes glued to the ever-growing numbers rising and rising. I remember thinking, how could we possibly win?

Watching the same video today, I barely get a second in before turning it off. Today I am less scared. Today I am not hopeless. Today I am ready to scream and fight, to rise and win.

Living in a society that is structured and governed against you, it is okay to feel defeated. It’s exhausting having to constantly fight to exist. It takes its toll. But there’s a reason why we still get up every morning and choose to fight, to live in a world that tries to defy us. Hope.

Because we hope to one day change the world so that our future generations don’t have to live through our same struggles. So that by the time that they have grown they are able to push our world to places we could never have imagined existing.

And while the failure to remove Trump from office may seem devastating, there is still hope. We can still fight. Here’s what is next:

We need the full results of Monday’s Iowa caucus.

You would think that because there is so much on the line, the DNC would work overtime to have the fairest and most transparent election to start off the Democratic primaries. However, that’s what we get for assuming and now two full days have passed and we still only have 71% of the votes tallied. Not only does this look bad for the party, but it also gives Trump and his party the tools to fuel distrust towards our general election.

So what can you do? Call the DNC. No, seriously, call them. (202) 863- 8000. Leave them a message, express your concerns. Will this make a difference? There’s no guarantee, but at worst it’s just cathartic.

Vote.

It’s just that easy.

This election season Republicans will be defending 23 seats. This is our chance to flip the senate and to gain the majority. Pay attention to your local politics, make a difference.

And finally, it is our duty to make sure that Trump does not take office next January. I don’t care if my number three candidate isn’t on the ticket against Trump, whoever is leading the charge against Trump this November is getting my vote.

Our fight isn’t over, it’s only just begun.
