Privilege Before Queerness // Log Cabin Endorses Trump for 2020

Last week the Log Cabin, our nation’s largest conservative LGBT organization, endorsed Trump’s 2020 presidential election bid. At first glance, this can come as a surprise to some. After all, the Log Cabin refused to endorse Trump during his 2016 campaign trail. Stating that they “didn’t feel like they could trust Trump.” Which leaves us to ask, what changed?

Queer conservatives claim that Trump is the most pro-gay president that our nation has ever had. Which honestly isn’t saying much, considering that same-sex marriage has only been legal for under two presidencies. But still they . . . “debate” . . .(?), citing that Trump plans on decriminalizing homosexuality across the globe and that he will eradicate HIV by 2030.

And while these far-fetched goals seem ideal, their roots still remain problematic. And we still can’t ignore all of the anti-queer policies that the Trump administration has pushed. Starting with his infamous trans-military ban, which was passed by the U.S. Supreme Court this year. Or we can look at the new rule proposed by the Department of Labor, which gives employers the power to fire and discriminate queer employees based on their sexuality, gender, and sexual activity. And of course, because who doesn’t like irony, this was set into motion just days before the Log Cabin declared their endorsement for Trump.

It seems odd that an LGBT organization is endorsing a president who is clearly not pro-LGBT, but it’s actually a little predictable. When these individuals say that Trump is pro-gay, they aren’t wrong. Trump is okay-gay. And that’s about it. He seems to be tolerant of queer existence and by no means does that suggest that we should support him.

So why do we see queer people supporting him? It’s because they are placing their privilege before their queerness.

It’s siding with the oppressor in hopes of not getting burned. It’s placing themselves above their queer siblings. It’s othering the rest of the community in order to get ahead. Because when it comes down to it, Trump’s administration isn’t going to have a negative effect on white, wealthy, and/or cisgender gays. So for them, it must be easy to be a Trump supporter. It must be easy to consider themselves “single-issue voters.” Because until Trump starts rolling back rights for privileged queer individuals, they are never going to be in harms way.

It’s going to harm queer people of color. It’s going to target queer-presenting people. It’s going to oppress queer, lower-income people. It’s going to effect queer immigrants. It’s going to attack our trans and non-binary siblings.

When the rich continue to benefit from tax cuts, when white supremacy continues to grow, when immigrants are still kept in concentration camps, then Trump supporters continue to have no power to lose.

Queers who support Trump do it for the power. They do it to keep themselves safe. They do it because they are placing their privilege before their queerness.
